Museum Gauteng Province South Africa Tours & Prices 2010 20 minute drive from OR TAMBO Airport. Non Malaria area See key map (E 1). Situated in Gauteng Province. The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid: The racially prejudiced system that blighted much of its progress and the triumph of reason which crowned half a century of struggle. The Apartheid Museum has been assembled and organized by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers, historians and designers. An architectural consortium comprising several leading architectural firms, conceptualized the design of the museum on a seven-hectare site. The Apartheid Museum is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique South African experience. The Apartheid Museum exhibits are from film footages, photographs, text panels and artifacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga, known as apartheid. A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a story of a state sanctioned system based solely on racial discrimination. After a few hours at the Apartheid Museum you will feel that you were in the townships in the '70s and '80s, dodging police bullets or teargas canisters, or marching and toyi-toyiing with thousands of school children, or carrying the body of a comrade into a nearby house. This extraordinarily powerful Apartheid Museum, certain to become one of Johannesburg’s most important tourist attractions, has become an obligatory stop for tourists and residents alike. The Apartheid Museum came about as part of a casino bid seven years ago. Bidders were obliged to include a social responsibility project, and the winning consortium indicated that they would build a museum. " R80-million was committed to the building of the museum by the consortium," says Till. "The consortium is committed to the running costs of the museum for a further two years, by which time they would have spent around R100-million on the project."
