Johannesburg
& Soweto Cities Gauteng Province South Africa Tours & Prices 2010 Johannesburg and Soweto tours can be done separately. 20 minute drive from OR Tambo Airport. Non Malaria area See key map (E 1). Situated in Gauteng Province Johannesburg City. More often today called Jozi or eGoli ‘place of gold’, Johannesburg’s primitive mine camp beginnings transformed swiftly into high-powered metropolis. But in modern times major business has migrated from the city centre to the leafy, moneyed suburbs. Downtown Jozi is now a true slice of Africa: a noisy hustle and bustle of mini-bus taxi’s, street vendors, traditional herb and muti shops, and tiny stores spilling out wares, from plastic buckets to blankets. Share in the vibrancy of this city by starting off with a magnificent panoramic view from the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre - "the top of Africa"... Johannesburg today is a city of contrasts, with glass-paned modern luxury high-rise buildings towering beside a few remaining dilapidated Victorian buildings, and affluent northern suburbs filled with stunning private homes giving way to the squalid streets and tiny shoebox houses of the massive Soweto township in the south. The chasm between rich and poor in the city has given rise to a high crime rate, evidenced by the fortress-like security that pervades the wealthier suburbs. Origins Centre. The museum is a world-class facility that comprises two independent but closely linked museums. It was designed by a team of academics and designers from Wits University and aims to provide visitors with a unique experience of Africa’s rich, complex and sometimes mysterious past. Combining cutting edge technology with the creative vision of South Africa’s foremost artists, the narrative structure of the museum takes visitors through an extraordinary journey of discovery. The journey begins with the origins of humankind in Africa and then moves through the development of art, symbolism, technology—the very things that give us our humanity—on the continent. The journey then continues through the destruction of the great and diverse southern African rock art traditions—the world’s oldest continuous art forms—at the hands of colonists before ending, more positively, with the re-discovery of these ancient masterworks in a contemporary world. Unashamedly Africa-centric, the Origins Centre seeks to restore the continent to its rightful place in history—as the place where everything that makes us who we are today originated. This sentiment is captured in the museum’s motto. Soweto. Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country, with Census 2001 putting its population at 896 995. Thanks to its proximity to Johannesburg, the economic hub of the country, it is also the most metropolitan township in the country - setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. Soweto, its name created from the acronym South Western Townships, has made its mark on the psyche of the New South Africa. It played a crucial historical role on the early days of resistance when the ANC (African National Congress) took a more vocal and visible stand against apartheid. Soweto rose to meet the challenge, embracing a more political, dynamic and also violent attitude when you witness the uprisings on 16 June 1976 against apartheid and many more unfairness onto non-Europeans in the Old South Africa. Today it is a muddled mix of poor and wealthy – a sprawl of shanties, mass produced shoebox houses and more solid, middleclass homes. The Soweto uprising or Soweto riots were a series of clashes in Soweto, South Africa on June 16, 1976 between black youths and the South African authorities. The riots grew out of protests against the policies of the National Party government and its apartheid regime. June 16 is now celebrated in South Africa as Youth Day. NO trip to Soweto is complete without a visit to Regina Mundi, Soweto's largest Catholic Church. Not only has the vast church always been a spiritual haven for thousands of Sowetans, it has also played a pivotal role in the township's history of resistance against apartheid. As such it is a well-circled destination on the tourist map: every day the church opens its doors to streams of visitors keen to witness the scars it still bears from the Soweto uprisings, when police stormed through its doors, firing live ammunition at fleeing students.
